What Is Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)?

Pitaya cut in half

Dragon fruit (pitaya) is a fruit you can find in tropical regions around the world. It grows on a Hylocereus, which is a climbing cactus. The plant’s name originates from the Greek word “hyle,” meaning “woody,” and the Latin word “cereus,” meaning “waxen.”

Pitaya is easy to distinguish because of its appearance. It looks like a hot pink or a yellow bulb with green spike-like leaves that look like flames surrounding it. When you cut it open, you’ll find white, plump stuff inside with dotted, black seeds inside that are good to eat.

There are two different variations that the skin of pitaya can come in- red and yellow. This cactus initially comes from southern Mexico and from South and Central America. In the early 19th century, The French brought it to Southeast Asia.

Different parts of the world call this fruit different names. Central Americans call it “pitaya,” while in Asia, it’s known as “strawberry pear.” Nowdays, dragon fruit can be found throughout the world.

People describe dragon fruit as a juicy and slightly sweet fruit, tasting like a cross between kiwi, pear, and watermelon. The seeds of pitaya have a nutty flavor.

Unfortunately, pitaya cannot be stored fresh all year round, but freeze-drying technology allows it. Try our lithophilized dragon fruit and order them now!
